Below are some photos of container growing. We are able to eat
delcious lettuce, greens, and herbs from the project all winter. No herbicides,
no pesticides, and a soil less mix. We do not sell our veggies and herbs, we
just enjoy and share with friends. Morriston, Florida, 32668, is suppose to
be zone 8, but we are in a cold spot.
The home made greenhouse is recycled from an old high school outfield fence
that we salvaged. The styrofoam containers are recycled shipping containers for
salmon that we catch in Alaska. The plastic pots are recycled from friends who
buy plants. There is so much recylable material out there that can be used to
grow and enjoy great veggies and herbs. The potting mix used in one third stall
cleanouts, one third vermiculite, one third canadian peat.
We have cows so we also compost cow manure, residual hay and coffee grounds
collected from a local restuarant. We also have chickens that add to the pile.
The misting system in the greenhouse can maintain the inside temperature at
approximately 45 degrees when the outside temperature is in the teens.
These are some photos of a growing technique that I am doing at this time in the greenhouse. The idea is not totally mine. I revised to use materials that I had on hand and devised my pumping system for the liquid fertilizer. The recovery of liquid fertilizer is between 60-70% each time that liquid fertilizer is applied.
This is the storage drum for the liquid fertilizer.
I improvised and used $2.00 styrofoam coolers. The growng media is 1/3 composted stall cleanouts, 1/3 canadian peat, and 1/3 vermiculite. The liquid fert. is Dr. Jackson’s Root and Fruit Tonic.
